This Time
starts moments before Richard III loses to Henry Tudor on the field of
Redemore near Leicester, England on August 22, 1485 where a team of Ricardians substitutes
an armor-clad corpse for the king and then brings him into the 21st-century in Portland,
Oregon. Richard awakens to an alien world where even the English he speaks is different.
"Joan Szechtman spans the ages to bring us the historical Richard in a modern world. She has created a novel of history across time and character.”--Peter Hancock, author of Richard III and the Murder in the Tower"
The premise is very imaginative--snatching Richard from Bosworth Field at the moment before his death and transporting him to our time--and Joan executed it quite well. She dealt with issues that would be bound to come up for a medieval man suddenly finding himself in our time, both the serious (religious intolerance) and the more mundane (cars, computers, etc.) I found her Richard to be believable and likable and I am looking forward to continuing his journey.”--Sharon Kay Penman, author of Sunne in Splendour, speaking of This Time in an interview on her blog.
Arrested f
or a 500-year-old murder, Richard III must defend himself without revealing
his true identity.
“Immortality plays into our hands strangely. Loyalty Binds Me is a unique novel that spins into a Richard the III alive in the twenty-first century. Wrapped into a centuries old problem and facing what he's been running from for centuries. With a five hundred year old murder mystery turning hot again, Loyalty Binds Me is a highly unique twist on historical fiction and mystery, recommended.”--Midwest Book Review
"Szechtman's solid historical research and skillful writing make "Loyalty Binds Me" a welcome addition to novels about the endlessly engrossing Wars of the Roses.--Arlene Okerlund, author of the historical biographies "Elizabeth: England's Slandered Queen" and "Elizabeth of York.
